When children were asked in a survey what they wanted to be when they got older, one in five children aged 10 and under said they 'just wanted to be rich’.
Discount website VoucherCodesPro.co.uk ran the survey, which surveyed over 1,300 children aged between five and ten years old.
The big question was, 'What would you like to be when you grow up?'
The results might surprise you. 22% of children answered ‘rich’, closely followed by ‘famous’ at 19%.
For the first time, when asked about their ambitions, kids want to be a celebrity and not a superhero. Traditional answers like ‘Fire-Fighter’, ‘Doctor’ and ‘Train Driver’ are no longer top of the list. Disappointingly, helping other people no longer seems to be the dream for aspiring kids- it’s now second to fame and fortune.
A staggering one in sixteen children said they would prefer not to work at all.
In the survey, children were asked what they wanted to be, rather than being shown a list of possibilities. A list was given to their parents, who then matched it with each child’s answer.
The top 10 responses from the 1,300 children were:
22% Just want to be rich
19% Famous
16% Police officer
14% Zoo keeper
13% Fire fighter
10% Doctor
8% Vet
7% Bus driver
7% Shop keeper
6% Don't want to work
Parents were also requested to ask their children whether they thought money would make them happy. 75% of the children replied with ’yes’
They were also asked how much they thought they would need to earn to be comfortable. The most common answer was 'one million pounds per year’.
So – being rich and famous has now overtaken the childhood dream of becoming a Doctor, a train driver or an astronaut. What does this say about the society we live in? Is it a sad state of affairs, or just twenty-first century reality?
