Farm to Fork – Free, fun cookery courses for children.

Are you fearful that your child might be joining a generation of ‘can’t cook kids’? Or would you just like an extra pair of helping hands in the Kitchen? Tesco & ‘The Children’s Food Trust’ are trying to help Mums and Dads all over the UK by offering free, fun cookery courses for children. We all like the word ‘free’ of course.

Working alongside The Children’s Food Trust, 50 Tesco stores across the country are offering courses throughout August, to help kids learn the basics. This will benefit an estimated 4,500 children between the ages of 5 and 13.

We all love the educational value, but it also provides something fun and practical for your little one's during the school summer holidays.

Recent research highlighted that almost 67% of parents’ worry that their children are growing up without basic cooking skills and food knowledge. Commissioned by Tesco, the results exposed some scary figures.

47% of schoolchildren do not have the skill to chop food with a knife. 75% have never boiled an egg, and a staggering 71% have never cooked pasta.  It’s no wonder therefore, that over half of the parents asked said they were worried about the long term impact of diet on their children’s health.

The Farm to Fork cooking courses, part of The Tesco Eat Happy Project, will help give children the skills in the kitchen to cook a variety of healthy and nutritious meals. These will range from a couscous salad, to mango chicken pittas or tasty tomato pasta.

With the popularity of TV cookery shows at its peak, it’s glaringly obvious that the skills are not being passed down through the generations. 52% of parents asked during the survey admitted that they spent significantly less time cooking for their children than their parents’ did.

The courses will offer tips and training that covers safety and hygiene through to ingredients and recipes. All delivered in a fun, cool way to keep children interested and engaged.

So, if you’ve visited all there is to see nearby it’s well worth a look. After all, wouldn’t it be nice to have something cooked for you for a change?
