We’re pretty sure learning to ride a bike is one of those big milestones, it’s just something you have to do! For us grown ups it’s a great way to fit in a little exercise and keep fit, don’t worry we don’t expect you to be the next Bradley Wiggins. A fun country ride with the family will do.

Balance bikes are the way to go with youngsters. They are designed to help little ones understand how to balance and coordinate themselves which will hopefully help to avoid the falls and scuffed knees. Chicco’s Red Bullet balance bike real is a steal, for only £34.99 it is the perfect first bicycle. Made from ultra-light metal it is easy for little ones to maneuver and the handlebars and seat can be adjusted to suit your child’s height.

Perfect for those learning to ride is the BikyBiky Kids Learn to Cycle Safely Vest. Shortlisted in the 2017 Best Baby & Toddler Gear Awards it is a must-have for learners. It is the easiest and safest way to teach your little one to get in their bike. Parents can walk upright beside them, grab the handle and help them balance, steer and guide them safely along the path as they find freedom on two wheels!

Getting out and about on your bike with youngster in tow has never been so easy. The Thule Yepp Nexxt Maxi is a lightweight and safe rear-rack-mounted child bike seat. It offers your child maximum comfort and a smooth ride with the soft and shock-absorbing design. It can be used with children from around 9 months to 6 years, so although it costs a little more than others, it is built to last. With an adjustable 5-point harness your little one is secure, safe and ready to ride!

Parents of two tots, you can still get out and about on your bike (without the slowing down of children pedalling) with a bike trailer. Halfords have a Double Buggy Child Bike Trailer that is easy to assemble and attach to your bike, with no tools required. Your children are going to love sitting back and riding in this trailer and the safety harness will keep the secure. With a high visibility flag, rear reflector, bug screen and rain shield you can get out whatever the weather (as long as you can deal with a little drizzle of rain)!

If you’re looking for a suitable bike for older children then it is worth checking out Islabikes. The Beinn is recommended for children 5+ but each bike is designed with an average age and suggested inside leg size, so parents can be sure they are getting the correct sized bike. This will help your children to develop their cycling skills quickly, easily and safely whilst being more comfortable and confidence. Our favourite part about the Beinn is that it can be kitted out as a stylish mountain, hybrid or road bike – which is super handy for adventurous families.
