I think when the teething process starts, the thing our little ones want more than anything is lots of cuddles with mummy. The trouble is they still have that urge to chew and this normally means mummy's hair gets a tad soggy! Here in the Mumii office, we have been testing out some teething jewellery from the lovely GUMIGEM, let's see if they can keep us mum's looking good whilst keeping our babies happy.
GUMIGEM was created by Jenny McLaughlan in 2010 whilst she was on maternity leave from having her second child. The idea was thought of as her little one went through the stage of teething and grabbing everything in reach. GUMIGEM is UK based and is a family-run business that produces silicone jewellery, which is both stylish for mums but keeps little hands entertained at the same time.
We were sent one of their GumiDrop necklaces and one of their Bubba Bangles to try, let's see if we can get mum's wearing their own accessories instead of muslin squares and hair bands on wrists!

We received the GumiDrop necklace in the Duchess colouring and the Bubba Bangle in the Pacific colouring but there are a wide variety of colours to choose from for both items of jewellery.
The GUMIGEM jewellery is designed to be a great way for mum's to keep their little ones occupied whilst allowing the mums to give a bit of extra style to their outfits and really add a splash of colour. GUMIGEM has expanded over the years, starting from just 3 styles of necklace, to now being able to choose from 9 different styles of necklaces and 2 different style bangles. This company is going from strength-to-strength and jewellery can now be purchased in the USA, Scandinavia, Australia, Italy, Singapore and of course the United Kingdom.
Each item of GUMIGEM jewellery is made from silicone, the same as things like dummy teats are made of. The good thing to know is that this material is free from BPA, PVC, Lead, Latex and Phthalate, meeting all required standards - this means it is all non toxic, so your little ones can chew away to their heart's content. I love how soft and flexible the silicone is and it doesn't get any teeth marks on it when those little toothy pegs start chomping away on it. You can easily wash the jewellery too, either in hot water or you can even put it in the dishwasher, ideal if it happens to get dropped on the floor or if sticky hands have been pawing all over it.
Each necklace is fastened with a breakaway clasp, so if your little ones decided to have a good tug on it, then there is no discomfort for mummy because it will come undone rather than pulling on your neck.
On the GumiDrop necklace, each bead and pebble is kept in place by knotting in the cord, this means it can't slide up and down the cord, so no danger of tiny fingers getting caught in anything.
The bangles don't have a feature as such but they do double up as a normal teething toy as well as jewellery because you can let your little ones use them without having to supervise them.
Now let’s not forget the main use for these items of jewellery is to be a nice accessory for all us mummies and I think GUMIGEM have designed it well, allowing you to dress up any outfit with ease. The colours are vibrant but all have a lovely shimmer to them, you can quite easily forget that these aren't just normal necklaces and bangles.
I love the jewellery because there are no hidden parts to it, the necklace is easy to put on, simply by popping over your head and the bangle is just slipped on to your wrist, no fiddly clasps to do up.
I don't know about anyone else but my little girl loves to chew and pull on my hair, something I'm not a fan of her doing. The GUMIGEM jewellery has stopped her doing this. It has meant that we can have a nice cuddle without her fidgeting around, I've been able to sit and read a couple of pages of a book whilst she has been sat on my lap, something that before has proven almost impossible.
I have also found that it comes in handy when I am carrying my daughter in a carrier or a wrap as it not only distracts her and keeps her fairly still whilst I get her secure on my back or front, it also stops her grabbing my earrings and hair as we walk around!!
As I stated in the features, the bangle doubles up as teething toy, this means that when I go out and about, it doesn't matter if I forget to pop a toy in the changing bag because I have one right there on my wrist.
The one thing you have to remember when wearing the GumiDrop necklace is that it isn't a toy and you must never let your little one play with it if you, the adult, aren't wearing it at the time!!
I love both the necklace and the bangle. With them being available in so many styles and colours, you can literally have a different one for every day of the week. The vibrant colours are not only stylish and fashionable, they are also very appealing to young children. The fact that they can be used as just jewellery or as something for your child to chew on too makes them really superb value for money. You can even buy in sets and save yourself money!
I would certainly recommend them to friends and family, you can buy them for yourself or they would make great gifts for mums and mums to be or maybe even nannies too.
The one thing I would like to see for the necklaces is an option to buy different lengths. It would be nice if you could buy different lengths as not everyone likes to have their necklaces long and dangling, some people prefer to have them closer to their necks.
We give the GUMIGEM jewellery 4.5 out of 5 stars
