Any breastfeeding mum will know how uncomfortable swollen and tender breasts can be. The Boob Warm/Cool Relief Pads are designed to help relieve this discomfort, and here at Mumii we have been taking a closer look.
Boob was born in 1999, when Mia Siepel watched her sister nurse her newborn son in a park in Stockholm, waist bare to the icy northern wind. Then and there, she decided that it should be every woman’s right to breastfeed in comfort and in style. Since then Boob has grown to include a wide range of breastfeeding clothing and accessories, including the Warm/Cool Relief Pads we have been reviewing.

Boob Warm/Cool Relief Pads are made from natural flax seed covered in an organic cotton outer. This means the bit that sits against your skin has a super soft feel, which is ever so important if you have swollen and tender breasts – you really don’t want anything rough or irritating to make things worse. The cotton covers can be easily removed for machine washing – again very important in the early breastfeeding days when there is an abundance of milk.
So how do they work? It’s really very simple. You can use the relief pads warm or cool, depending on your personal needs and preference. Warm use can encourage milk flow, help prevent clogged milk ducts and help in the healing of mastitis or infection. In this case, simply pop the pads inside the microwave for 20-40 seconds and wear inside your bra for 5 minutes before a feed. If you don’t have a microwave to hand (often the case on holiday etc) then you can pop them into the oven on the lowest setting for 10 minutes or so. The warming feeling is very soothing, and having has mastitis myself, I can imagine how much comfort this would bring – similar to a warm bath.
To use as cooling relief pads, you just store the pads in your freezer, and wear inside your bra between feeds. This can help to reduce the swelling and tenderness that is associated with engorgement and can provide relief during weaning. The cooling sensation is instant – again, having had engorged breasts myself I can relate to how much relief these pads would bring. Anyone who has breastfed will know that feeling you get when baby hasn’t fed for a while, or when you stop breastfeeding – it’s agony, and these boob relief pads would be so helpful in this case.
My only gripe with these pads is the bulkiness. They are quite thick, and if you were wearing them out and about, you may feel self conscious about them showing through a t-shirt. However, I do think it is a small price to pay for what you are getting in terms of relief and comfort, especially in the early breastfeeding days when your milk first comes in, and for when you decide to stop breastfeeding.
Priced at £19 they are reasonable value for the amount of use you are likely to get out of them. I love the soft cotton outer, and I love that it can be removed for washing. The fact you can use them warm or cold is a great bonus, as you are effectively getting 2 products in one.
If you intend to breastfeed, I would certainly recommend the Boob relief pads.
We give the Boob Warm/Cool Relief Pads 4 out of 5 stars
