The Mexican Bola is a very simple concept. Inside the round pendant is a sort of xylophone with a moving ball, that moves around as you do – creating a soft chime noise. From around 20 weeks of pregnancy, the baby in the womb can hear this noise, and be soothed by it. By the time the baby is born, this chime noise will be comforting for the baby. The noise is ever so soft and gentle, and I imagine the muted sound of it would be similar to what the baby hears in the womb – not too brash and loud like all the other noises your newborn will hear on entering the world – and so the familiar sound of the Bola would be a comfort.
The bola comes on a slim black string style necklace, which is hugely generous in length, and would fit even the roundest pregnant tummy. It can be shortened by simply tying a knot. Although the black rope is practical and adjustable, it is not the prettiest – it would be nice to see other colours or patterns available – maybe a plaited or twisted option for the fashion conscious mummies. Babylonia have just launched silver and gold chain necklaces to upgrade the Bola on to if you prefer this to the string. It is comfortable to wear, and you soon forget you even have it on – there is no friction or rubbing as you sometimes find with these types of pendants.
A new and exciting idea, the Mexican Bola would make a perfect gift for any expectant mum. The Bola will soothe and comfort baby, and the fact that you can choose from a wide range of colours and patterns makes this a versatile and colourful option. I would personally like to see other colour strings available, but apart from that this is a lovely item. As stated, the new silver and gold necklaces are available separately if you would like a nicer chain. Something that works for the baby whilst still inside the womb is unique – and a beautiful thing to try.
We give the Babylonia Mexican Bola 4 out of 5 stars
