A new law in the United Arab Emirates has made breastfeeding for a full two years the law.
The Emirates' Federal National Council has passed a new law which requires new mums to breastfeed their babies for 2 full years. This new law has a clause that allows husbands to SUE their wives if they do not breastfeed.
The law states that it is every childs right to be breastfed, and this law is just supporting research that shows the many benefits of breastfeeding for both the baby and the mother.
The law does realise that in some circumstances, a woman may not be able to breastfeed. Well, if that is the case, the council will provide a wet nurse to feed her baby for her.
Now, we all know the benefits of breastfeeding, and for many of us it is the right choice. But for others, there are many reasons they may choose not to breastfeed. They may be on medication that makes it impossible, they may find it too difficult, or they may just not want to breastfeed. IN this country mothers have the choice. And so they should.
I am a huge advocate of breastfeeding, but I also believe that a mother should have the right to choose how to feed her baby without being judged or made to feel she is doing something wrong. I know that personally, I would most certainly not have wanted a wet nurse to feed my baby if I was unable to – I would worry that my baby would bond with someone else instead of me.
That’s just my view. But I think that the only thing that really matters is that your baby is fed with love. I am worried this new law will just put undue pressure on new mums already feeling the strain. And that can never be a good thing.
What do you think about this? Do you agree that it will help to promote the benefits of breastfeeding, or do you think that it will just give new mums another thing to worry about?
