Tesco Mum of the Year is a most unique and admirable award which honours those mums who have gone above and beyond what is expected of them. Tesco commend mums who have given their all and more for their children and in effect, changed the lives of countless others. Year after year Tesco have shared the awe-inspiring stories of these mums and now, at their 10 year anniversary they have shared a video to celebrate them. This tear-jerking video gives us a glimpse at what 5 individuals lives would have been like without these incredible women.
This year the Tesco mum of the year was Emma Salisbury, who has worked tirelessly to stop her 4 year old son from going blind due to a genetic eye condition, choroideremia. So far, Emma has fundraised over £400,000 to fund research and treatment for the Tommy Salisbury Choroideremia Fund.
But it's not just Tommy who has benefitted from Emma's efforts. Wayne Thompson's life has been turned around dramatically thanks to Emma. He was told by Doctors that he would gradually lose his sight and would likely be completely blind by the time he reached his 50's. What Emma has achieved should be an inspiration to us all, and she should be very proud. This is what she had to say:
“It’s pretty amazing that Wayne might be able to see his children get married one day because of something I’ve done. It makes me feel very humble and even more determined to raise more funds to fund further research.”
Previous Winners of Tesco Mum of the Year Award have been Lynn McManus, who founded The Tim Lamb Centre in Tyne & Wear in 2014 and has changed the way we look at Autism. In 2013, the winner was Claire Lomas, who despite being paralysed, walked the London Marathon in an exoskeleton. It took her 16 days to walk the marathon, but she raised £200,000 for Spinal Research. In 2011 the winner was Wendy Watson, who now runs the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline 365 days a year. The 2009 winner was Linda James, who founded the charity 'BulliesOut'.
