Krista and Jami's doctor of choice - Dr. Roi of Massachusetts has refused to treat a lesbian couple's 6 day old baby. Her reason for refusing the treatment was that she disagreed with the couple's situation. Krista and Jami told Slate magazine that another doctor was forced to fill in and explain why Roi would not treat the baby...
“The first thing Dr. Karam said was, ‘I’ll be your doctor, I’ll be seeing you today because Dr. Roi decided this morning that she prayed on it, and she won’t be able to care for Bay,” Jami said. “Dr. Karam told us she didn’t even come to the office that morning because she didn’t want to see us.”
The couple had chosen Roi as their doctor last September. They said that when they first met her she seemed very accepting and helpful. But once their bundle of joy had arrived, it seems Dr. Roi had changed her mind.
Exactly how cold must one's heart be to risk a newborn's life just out of principle? We find it devastating that someone could feel so strongly against same sex parenting that they could give up their duty of care.
